Salts and Vinegar
New Christmas Flavours in the church
Think of salt and vinegar and you’ll probably conjure up an image of steaming fish and chips, but they have also been playing their part in the East Church conservation project.
Tom Hillocks, painting expert (pictured
with David Alston), has been advising the conservation team on repainting the church - what paints to chose, how to apply them and how to make sure that colour doesn’t leak through from older paintwork.
Up in the coombs the older paint had a dusting of powde
ry pigment on the surface, and this is where the vinegar comes in. Tom recommended a wiping down with vinegar to wipe of the loose particles and fix the paint below.
Salts have been causing a bit of a problem in some patches of the church as they come through the walls and new plasterwork.
This can be difficult to cure - but Tom had a recommendation - vinegar again ...It has been applied for a few days now, and so far things are looking good.
